Tuesday, November 03, 2009 1:58:46 PM I was looking for the Onion logo when she called the baby a new toy. WHERE IS THE ONION LOGO!?
I'm still hoping that was a bad translation. |

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 1:57:27 PM I just think 10 years old is cutting too much into childhood. but that's just me.
It's not just you - I think it's too young by years, as do many people. I know that parenthood at a very young age can work out fine if there is an extended family, e.g. the grandparents actually raise the child, but it seems very wrong to me. The older I get, the older the ages I feel are appropriate for age of consent and for parenthood. I'm up to about 20 and 30 respectively now. Although I'm not sure than anyone is really ready for parenthood, ever. |

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 1:41:55 PM We don't deny the existence of puberty at all.
Which, of course, is why it's normal to regard anyone under 18 as a young child, or even an infant, and to explicitly say so, with no distinction being made between a baby and an adolescent. I didn't mention the USA at all, so that part of your post is just made up. |

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 3:45:43 AM oh angil, give it a rest already. Americans don't deny the existence of puberty like you want to believe, so stop trying to make us out to be stupid bumpkins.puberty in America begins around the age of 10, when it was 12.5 only 8-10 years ago. Puberty is beginning earlier and earlier, due partially to better nutrition and health care in this country. the problem with it is that 10-year-old girls do not at all know how to handle themselves around boys, or judge the future consequences of their actions--their brains are just not developed enough (and I'm right about this, so do your research before you come back at me). I don't know about other people, but I certainly don't like seeing little 11-year-old girls running around in belly shirts, booty shorts, and a pound of makeup, looking like 18-year-old hookers--that's just inviting the attention of pedophiles. We don't deny the existence of puberty at all. |

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 12:34:40 AM PsychGeek, if you would have actually read the article, you'd notice that it said that the 19 year old father may be jailed for up to 6 years for having sex with a girl under 14. So no, it's not acceptable in their country. Which means that YOU are wrong.
She's not entirely wrong. Strictly speaking, it isn't paedophilia. Strictly speaking, a child is a person who has not yet started puberty. So she can't be a child, so this can't be paedophilia. Illegal (in most places), morally wrong (in my opinion), etc, but not, strictly speaking, paedophilia. |

Tuesday, November 03, 2009 12:27:52 AM In America, we try to keep children as innocent for as long as possible, before they're exposed to the corruptions of adult society.
Keeping people ignorant for as long as possible doesn't really help regarding exposure to the corruptions of society. But that's not what I was talking about. I was talking about ignoring aging, including the complete denial of the existence of adolescence, that's normal in the west and apparently becoming more extreme. The complexity of reality reduced to a silly fantasy of only two states of existence (infant and adult) and a magic age at which everyone suddenly flips from one to the other. I've even seen it taken as far as people regarding adults, people with voting rights and suchlike, as children. Reality is far less rigid than that and contains far more than two groups. There's far too much of an obsession with dividing humanity into only two groups. |
